Sleep Slows the Aging Process The term “beauty rest” is literally true. Some say sleep is one of the most important “secrets” for averting wrinkles and premature aging. How well a person sleeps is one of the most important predictors of how long a person will live.
Sleep is Vital for Your Immune System. People who sleep nine hours a night instead of seven have greater than normal “natural killer cell” activity. Natural killer cells destroy viruses, bacteria, and cancer cells.
Sleep Reduces Cortisol Levels Excessive stress raises cortisol levels, which disrupt neurotransmitter balance in the brain, causing you to be more irritable and prone to depression, anxiety and insomnia.
What happens when you don’t sleep?
· You can affect your body’s ability to process carbohydrates, leading some people to a prediabetic state. Lack of adequate sleep increases your risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
· You endanger your life and the lives of others. Sleep deprivation is responsible for at least 100,000 crashes and 1,500 fatalities a year.
Action Steps
Make sure adults get seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. Infants need about fourteen hours a day. A five-year old needs twelve hours a dayDid you know…?
Getting enough sleep will help your learn new skills. Studies have shown that sleep build procedural memory. What you practice during the day, you continue to learn while you are sleep.
